How to use it
- Start and stop
- Tap the circle, or press Space.
- Tempo
- 30–300 BPM. Tap − or +, or hold one to keep going. Drag the number right or up to speed up, left or down to slow down; drag slowly for fine steps. With the number selected, the arrow keys change it by 1, Page Up and Page Down by 10.
- Beats per bar
- 1–7. Tap right of the dots for one more beat, left of them for one fewer, or drag across them. 1 turns the accent off.
- The click
- A mellow sine beep, higher and louder on the downbeat (1875 Hz) than on the other beats (1250 Hz). The circle swells as strongly as the click is loud, and settles back like jelly before the next beat.
- Privacy
- No ads, cookies or analytics. The page stores nothing and sends nothing; the sound is made in your browser.
Questions
Does this online metronome keep steady time?
Yes. Each click is placed ahead of time on the browser’s audio clock, to the sample, rather than timed by the page, so the tempo does not drift however long it plays. Changing the tempo while it plays times the next beat from the last one, without a break.
Why is there no sound on my iPhone?
On iPhone, web pages usually play no sound in silent mode. Turn silent mode off and turn the volume up. The iPhone app plays in silent mode too.
Is the circle in step with Bluetooth headphones?
The circle allows for the output delay that the browser reports. Not every browser reports the whole delay of Bluetooth headphones, so the circle may run slightly ahead of the sound. The iPhone app allows for the delay that iOS reports.
Does it keep playing in the background?
On a computer, it keeps playing while the tab is open, even behind other tabs. On a phone, the browser usually stops the sound when the screen locks or you switch apps; the iPhone app keeps playing.
